This broke every rule and it worked

One of my students doubled his response rate with the ugliest, most unpolished follow-up message I’ve ever seen.
It was bad. No formatting. No punctuation. Just raw, fast, and straight to the point.
But it worked.
Here’s exactly what he did:
He posted a simple lead magnet on LinkedIn. Nothing fancy, just something genuinely helpful his audience cared about.
A few people engaged—liked, commented, or downloaded it.
Instead of letting that engagement sit there, he moved fast. He:
Replied to comments right away with a quick “got you”
Sent DMs to every person who liked, commented, or downloaded
Shared an extra resource that was genuinely useful
Asked one specific question about their business
No automation. No tools. Just personal, fast action.
The result?
His response rate jumped from 15% to 37% in just one week.
This approach works because most people overcomplicate things. They spend weeks setting up automations, writing fancy templates, or making their lead magnets “perfect.” By the time they’re ready, their leads have already moved on.
The truth is, all you need to do is:
Create a simple lead magnet that's helpful to your prospects
Respond quickly to anyone who engages with it
Start a real conversation in their DMs
Share something useful and ask them a genuine question
It doesn’t need to be perfect. You just need to start.
